summer of the giant squid
late july and the front pages of national papers are screaming choruses of mounting kraken songs — pugnacious and hungry, humbolts stretch tentacles into california; killer squid invasion! last summer it was the world cup, this year a cthulhu-driven death count – bloody beaked leitmotif to chinatown happy hours with History (bearded), married but without ring — allergic to selenium. twelve legs, all writhing, dangling down and six long swaying necks– it began with dr. steve oshea in early february: scintillating scilla, dead off the coast of japan. we were curious then, are still curious — now with toes out of writhing waters, wondering how friends from high school ended up and placing deep sea metaphors.

death-defying sailors throwing their mighty harpoons at them from across the world cannot piece thy beak-ed heart. they shall know soon the sorrows of the sea; why she cries out for them and holds them closely in her briney boon. avash!
