what follows is the slightly tippled idea i had to use twitter in the manner of the youths/american media personalities (the so-called “twitterati”), broadcasting every (mostly) substantive change over the course of a friday night to over 400 people via cellular/social-networking technology.

l.a. henkel, author of Tight Pantsy Drew and Dear Drunk Girl, is notoriously flibbertigibbet (i’m sorry, but it’s true). we were supposed to have mexican, and then a friend was sitting on our steps in icy williamsburg so rachel couldn’t meet us, and then there were l.a.’s similarly flibbertigibbet work friends and a free vodka/gin tasting. which was hilarious. highlights were heavy water, glacier tapped and glowing from sweden, and bulldog, which had a presentation table that looked as if a bad maxim spread exploded all over it. i tried not to get too drunk on thimble sized dixiecups of elderflower martinis and black & golds.

l.a. has a big purse, so had some issues finding her metrocard. her friends were confused rabbits and got on the train without her, i stayed and recommended going to the bedford stop (because that’s where we’d talked about meeting her friends, and because i had to pick up rachel and other friend). we got out of the subway, her friends had gone a few more stops because “they were confused”. to be fair, it is a wild and woolly world. i met up with r. and her friend at – appropriately – the rabbit hole, to reconoitter with l.a. later.

rachel and friend got me a mission style burrito (at the place where someone stuck a boner dollar sticker under the register) and i went to the wine store, originally for a bottle or two of syrah. turns out i’m totally susceptible to trashy marketing sometimes. or maybe it was just the Bulldog representative’s terrible sales pitch: “i just put it in a pitcher for the girls and mix it with Crystal Lite!”

you know that cathartic moment when everyone just turns on one person and teases the shit out of them, and then afterwards it’s like the Carrie movie credits and it’s sort of tense and eerie but everyone knows that the worst that can possibly happen is over? well, it wasn’t like that at all – these girls… their hearts weren’t in it… but apparently i shouldn’t ever talk about Search Engine Optimization in public ever, ever again.

As for The Eternal Cowboy, it’s a pretty great album. i never cared that they moved from No Idea to Fat Wreck. Now that Tom’s doing solo stuff again, I’m even warming to New Wave.

Dead Herring is a friend-of-a-friend run loft venue around the block from my house, and Friday was turning into an animal themed night (Rabbits, Herring, Bulldog). The “Cannon…” part is L.A. wanting to help update my live blog with gibberish, but not realizing my cellphone does the predictive text thing. So she couldn’t get the right gibberish to post. I think the work holds regardless.

If you live in brooklyn, you know what it means to be the only person at an underground show not wearing glasses (realizing, perhaps, that a full third of the people there probably have plastic lenses in their buddy hollys). This isn’t a great sign, but it’s not terrible either. It’s more like a little post-it from the universe saying “steel yourself”; i always appreciate the warning.

I make the delayed, but not unexpected, call that this show is very unlike a regular DIY show – you know, where you look around and maybe get a little sad and wonder where some people’s mothers are. Here, we have a good idea where the mothers are, and roughly what they’re doing. Without wanting to assume too much, the collective moms may also be streaming archives of This American Life on NPR. Also: I meant, like… vegetable fusion stir fry.

The band was pretty fun, they sounded vaguely superchunk-ish (that is, like mid-90s north carolina indie-rock) – but they had terrible feedback and didn’t know to either turn off the monitors – were there monitors? – or face away from their amps, or change something… anything. They chugged through their set regardless, not unlike the JMZ train, which you could see intermittently behind them.
