I first saw Mark perform this piece as a one-off at Penny’s – a hurdy-gurdy holy roller that literally had the crowd holding their breath until he erupted, at the final blue-faced moment, into a trumpeted “Saints Go Marching In”. Seeing it again now, stripped of the stage and without redemption, “Just One Thing” reminds me of Auster’s City of Glass and Arnofsky’s Pi – a sort of religiously solipsistic offering made for subvocal safeword mantras. Glad I took the time – and I know it’s hard to really get excited about a young and living poet… but it’s just really transportive and worth reading, especially on this rainy Saturday night. If that weren’t enough, Joe’s giving away a redux of War’s End titled The Dreamless Sea.
